Our Mother Organization

About / Our Mother Organization

Standing in the city's government and financial centre since 1849, St John’s Cathedral is the mother church and the cathedral of the Diocese of Hong Kong Island in the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui (Anglican Church of Hong Kong). Guided by our mission statement, “St John’s is a place of God’s grace, welcoming all, following Christ, and changing lives in the heart of Hong Kong”, we endeavour to offer God’s transforming power and love to all people through worship, education, pastoral care, Christian fellowship and social ministry.

Deeply rooted in the traditions of Anglicanism and yet at the same time embracing today’s world, St John’s Cathedral and its three daughter churches, located in Stanley, Discovery Bay and Pokfulam, are now an international community with worship services offered in English, Putonghua, Cantonese and Tagalog. Being part of the 80-million strong worldwide Anglican family, the cathedral reflects the diversity and multicultural nature of our church. Today, the ministry of the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui is carried out through 50 parishes/mission churches, more than 130 schools and 400 social service agencies.

Social ministry at St John’s Cathedral has always been an integral and important part of our community from the earliest days, in response to the needs of the time. Today, with a dedicated team of volunteers and staff, we offer a professional counselling service, paralegal and caring support for foreign workers, a bookstore, HIV education, poverty alleviation, a life enrichment programme for youth, and a prison visiting service reaching more than 30,000 people per year. The cathedral also supports more than 40 local charities annually.

St John’s Cathedral is incorporated by the Church of England Trust Ordinance under which final responsibility for it is vested in three trustees: the Dean (the head clergyman) and two lay people who are elected by the congregation. This authority is delegated to a cathedral council which is elected annually and, along with a dedicated team of clergy, they provide leadership and guidance in the life of St John’s. Various committees and boards are established to assist in the day-to-day running of the different departments and ministries.

We thank God that St John’s Cathedral is a vibrant community, striving to follow Jesus and empowering people to live life abundantly in today’s society. We invite you to get to know us and join our community.
